Power Toothbrush vs. Manual Toothbrush

Which One is Better?

power toothbrush vs. manual toothbrush

Many of our patients ask us, "How important is it to use the right toothbrush?"

It's really important!

While using a manual toothbrush is, of course, better than nothing at all, many oral health care professionals want their patients to make the switch to electric/power toothbrushes. These types of toothbrushes help ensure patients get their mouths as clean as possible, which reduces the risk of developing a cavity and gingivitis.

Advantages of Power or Electric Toothbruses

Regardless of their current oral condition, electric toothbrushes offer people a variety of advantages and are usually the best option. These toothbrushes do the work for them. Many power toothbrushes even incorporate a timer and a pressure indicator light to let people know if the are brushing too hard which may damage their gums.

Not only do power toothbrushes make brushing easier, people usually love how they make their mouths feel.

Electric toothbrushes are also great options for children, especially if they have braces. Elderly patients with dexterity issues can also benefit from these types of toothbrushes. Many older patients can' t move their hands the way they need to, so if they use a manual brush, they're likely leaving plaque behind. An electric toothbrush cleans their teeth for them. So as long as they get it close to where it needs to be, it's going to remove plaque and helps prevent cavities and periodontal disease.

Types of Power Toothbrushes

There are many types of power toothbrushes. For example, one kind uses oscillating-rotating (spin) action and another uses sonic (side-to-side vibrating) action to clean teeth.

Spin brushes have small, round brush heads that rotates back and forth in a circular motion to help remove plaque. A small brush head can be very good for cleaning the hard-to-reach areas.

The sonic toothbrush uses a vibrating side-to-side cleaning motion. The shape of this toothbrush head is a lot like a manual toothbrush. Both spin and sonic power brushes work great in removing plaque.

It was just our worries, anxieties, or the unknown running wild and getting the better of us. Time and time again, our new patients tell us how dental care can be a lot like Halloween. They have anxiety because of the unknown, or they had an unfavorable experience in the past that resulted in a reluctance to continue to seek care on a regular basis.
