Occlusal Guard

Occlusal Guard

Occlusal is a term used for the surfaces of your teeth involved with chewing. These surfaces can become damaged by clenching or grinding your teeth. An Occlusal Guard, also known as a night guard or bite guard, is used to prevent damage to the surfaces of your teeth and alleviate symptoms that may develop from oral related health conditions.

In addition to treating these types of symptoms, the guard is an effective way to protect dental work that has been performed.

Occlusal Guards are removable, made from a soft, flexible material, and custom-fitted to a patient's mouth for a snug, secure fit, allowing for optimum performance and comfort. While most Occlusal Guards are worn at night only, those who frequently grind or clench their teeth throughout the day may also benefit from daytime wear.

Treatment and Protection

Bruxism

Occlusal Guards are often recommended to individuals who grind or clench their teeth while sleeping, a condition known as bruxism. The guard is a barrier between the upper and lower teeth, preventing them from coming into direct contact and reducing the damage caused by grinding or clenching.

TMJ Disorders

Temporomandibular joint disorders, or TMJ, can cause jaw pain and dysfunction. When an Occlusal Guard is used, it helps reduce pressure and provides relief from the pain.

Tooth Wear and Sensitivity

Occlusal Guards can prevent excessive wear and tear on teeth, which can lead to tooth sensitivity, fractures, and other issues over time.

Headaches, Earaches, Toothaches, and Facial Pain

The grinding or clenching of teeth can cause headaches, earaches, toothaches, and facial pain. An Occlusal Guard can help reduce these types of pain by providing a cushioning effect and minimizing muscle strain.

Insomnia

An Occlusal Guard can help improve your sleep patterns by relieving oral health related symptoms, enhancing comfort,  and reducing stress.

Protecting Dental and Orthodontic Work

Occlusal Guards are a great way to protect dental work such as crowns, bridges, and veneers. The guard helps prevent damage that may be caused by grinding or clenching. Occlusal guards can also be used in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, such as braces, to protect both teeth and orthodontic appliances from damage while you are sleeping.
